General Liability Insurance:

Protecting Your Business from the Unexpected

Every business, no matter the industry, faces risks. A simple accident—like a customer slipping on a wet floor or a contractor accidentally damaging a client’s property—can quickly escalate into a legal and financial headache. General Liability Insurance helps cover these risks, so one incident doesn’t throw your business off track.

What Does It Cover?

General Liability Insurance provides a financial safety net for a variety of situations, including:

✔ Bodily Injury – Covers medical expenses if a customer, client, or third party is injured on your business premises or due to your operations.

✔ Property Damage – Helps pay for repairs or replacement if your business unintentionally damages someone else’s property.

✔ Legal Costs – Covers attorney fees, court costs, and settlements if your business is sued over an accident or alleged negligence.

✔ Advertising & Personal Injury – Protects against claims of libel, slander, or copyright infringement in your business advertising.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Many small businesses assume they don’t need liability insurance, but even a minor claim can be costly. Legal fees alone can add up quickly; without proper coverage, you may have to pay out of pocket. General Liability Insurance helps businesses handle unexpected incidents without derailing operations or financial stability.

It’s also often required. Many landlords, vendors, and clients expect businesses to carry liability insurance before signing contracts or partnerships. Having coverage in place not only protects you but also allows you to take on more opportunities with confidence.

Who Needs It?

If you interact with customers, vendors, or the public in any way, liability coverage isn’t optional—it’s essential. Whether you own a retail store, operate a contracting business, provide professional services, or work with clients on-site, there’s always a chance that something could go wrong. One unexpected claim could be all it takes to disrupt your business.

At University Insurance Group, we’re here to help you secure the proper protection for your business. Avoiding Post-Winter Roof Surprises:

What to Check and When to Act

Winter can be harsh on your roof, and as temperatures rise, hidden damage may start to show. A minor issue now can turn into a costly repair later, so a post-winter roof check is essential. Here’s what to look for and when to take action.

Step 1: Inspect from the Ground

Start by walking around your home and looking up at the roof. Signs of trouble include:

  • Missing, cracked, or curling shingles - These indicate wear and potential leaks.
  • Sagging or uneven sections - This could mean structural damage or trapped moisture.
  • Debris buildup in valleys or gutters - Leaves and branches can trap moisture, leading to rot and leaks.

Step 2: Check Your Gutters and Downspouts

  • Look for granules from shingles, as excessive shedding means your roof may be nearing replacement.
  • Make sure gutters are secure and clear to prevent overflow and water damage.
  • Confirm that downspouts direct water away from the foundation to avoid basement leaks.

Step 3: Inspect the Attic

  • Check for water stains, mold, or a musty smell — all signs of slow leaks.
  • Look for light shining through the roof; Even small gaps can lead to major water damage.
  • Feel for drafts. Poor insulation or ventilation can lead to ice dams next winter.

Step 4: Schedule Repairs Before Spring Rains

If you notice damage, act quickly. Minor repairs now can prevent costly problems later. Contact a roofing professional for a full inspection if you're unsure.
