Navigating the Auto Insurance Maze: Common Claims Demystified
Erwin Dominique Fedelino

Peace of mind on the road starts with understanding your auto insurance. However, with various policies and coverages, navigating claims can feel overwhelming. Let's clear up some confusion and shed light on how your insurance responds in everyday situations.

Scenario 1: Lending a Hand, Damaging a Plan?

Am I covered if my neighbor dents my car while borrowing it?

It depends on your policy. Most standard coverage extends to occasional drivers with your permission. However, consider adding named drivers to your policy for frequent borrowers to ensure coverage.

Scenario 2: Cracked Windshield Blues?

Does my deductible apply to windshield repair/replacement?

- Florida law (Statute §627.7288) is on your side! If your policy includes Comprehensive coverage, your insurer cannot charge a deductible for qualified windshield repairs or replacements. Enjoy clear views without breaking the bank (on this repair, at least). Remember, this only applies to windshields, not side or back windows.

Scenario 3: Rental Car Roulette: To Waiver or Not to Waiver?

Should I buy the extra coverage when renting a car?

- Your Auto insurance might offer some protection, but it may not be enough. Rental companies often have a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) to cover damage. Carefully compare your policy's coverage with the rental company's options before deciding. Don't hesitate to ask questions!

Scenario 4: Sunshine State, No-Fault State?

Isn't Florida a no-fault state? What does that mean?

- Yes, Florida is a no-fault state. This means your insurance, regardless of fault, pays for your medical bills and car repairs up to your policy limits. However, exceptions exist. You can sue for additional damages exceeding your policy limits if the other driver was reckless or intoxicated. Additionally, Florida's high rate of uninsured drivers makes uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage crucial.

Bonus Tip: Review your policy regularly to meet your changing needs.
